Keaau, Hawaii --- Keaau Shopping Center and Sure Save Supermarket held the 5th Annual "A Taste Of Puna - Cook Off" on Saturday March 17, 2001 at the Keaau Shopping Center.
Best Of Show award went to Meka Eastman with her presentation - Puna Pesto Torta and Puna Business Pick of the Day went to Volcano House with their presentation - Lamb Chops with Mint Pesto or Provencal Garnish, and Fish Provencal.
TV Celebrity Judge Mike Sakamoto Of "Fishing Tales" said, "The Taste Of Puna event was fun, well coordinated and all the food tasted great, deciding the winner was the toughest part". Other celebrity judges included Senator Russell Kokubun, Councilman - Gary Safarik; Pahoa Assembly Of God - Pastor Jeffrey Saylor; Bizlink Hawaii - Richard Nelson; Surt's Restaurant and Chateau Kilauea - Brian Crawford; Volcano House - Lee Harlow; Charley's Bar and Grill - Jenna Seifert; Volcano Winery - Alisa Vegas, Plant It Hawaii - Suzie Hamilton; Alexandra's Greek Foods - Sandra Collins, RN.
Business presentations were made by Surt's Restaurant, Volcano Winery, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company, Alibi Tavern, Lemongrass Restaurant, Volcano House, Meadow Gold, Keaau Kau-Kau Korner, Pepsi Cola Company, Sure Save, and the Hawaii County Police Department - Keiki ID Program.
The objectives of this project are to 1) strengthen community pride 2) increase sales and marketing for all participants, 3) showcase creative images of Puna. and 4) provide an enjoyable community event.
Sponsors of the event were Sure Save, Keaau Shopping Center, Western Union, Volcano Winery, Hawaii Baking Company, Meadow Gold, Pepsi Cola Company, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company, Suisan Company, and Cal-Kona Produce.
