Welcome to "Taste Of Puna"
Volcano House Restaurant

Keaau, Hawaii,

Nanawale resident Victor Beardsley took top honors in the Sure Save Supermarket 6th Annual "Taste of Puna" Cook Off.  His fruit salad "Puna Delight" was judged Best of Show. The event took place at the Keaau Shopping Center on Saturday, February 16, 2002.

Beardsley's Puna Delight was made entirely of tropical fruits from Puna, including rainbow papaya, sweet white pineapple, and apple bananas.

It was presented in a serving bowl made from wood of the Norfolk Island pine by Beardsley's neighbor Joseph Mathews, of Makana Woods. Individual servings were presented in bowls of carved, fresh rainbow papaya. Beardsley said he enjoys using apple bananas because they don't brown. The entry was displayed on a starburst of Lauhala and moni-tree leaves.

Sure Save staff judged Volcano House the Business Pick of The Day.  The Volcano House team, Lee Harlow, Cy Lopez, and Manuel Vierra presented Puna-style beef Osso Bucco, grilled Ahi and mahi-mahi with tropical Salsa..

According to Harlow, Volcano House co-owner, "The secret was Volcano Winery's Honey Macadamia Wine."

Celebrity Judges Guy Hagi and Kim Gennaula, from KGMB News 9, Honolulu, called the event, "So wonderful - the people from the Keaau and Puna area were so warm, and the food presentation rivals any other presentation we participated in."

According to project chairperson Carl Okuyama, CEO of Sure Save Supermarkets, Taste of Puna is a series of events to promote Puna.
